2 law enforcement officers shot, wounded in Georgia

Law enforcement officers in rural Georgia are investigating after two officers were shot and wounded outside the city of Newnan, authorities said.

One of the officers has died from his injuries, the Macon Telegraph reports. His name was not immediately released.

The deputies had gone to a home to arrest Gregory Towns, who is wanted in connection with a murder in Madison County earlier in the evening, Macon-Bibb County sheriff’s deputies said.

Alabama State Trooper Christopher Deaton confirmed in a tweet that Towns was suspected in the death of 44-year-old Madison County resident Terry Brown at around 10:45 p.m. Eastern time.

The Marshall County Coroner’s Office identified Brown as the suspect in a fatal stabbing of his estranged wife, Luana Brown, at their home on Johns Creek Road in Piedmont, about 19 miles from the address of the home where Towns was a resident.

Towns, 60, was last seen riding a red-and-white Harley Davidson motorcycle with chrome wheels, Deaton tweeted.

The search for Towns is ongoing.

Additional information was not immediately available.
