A total of 6 people were injured Wednesday night following an explosion in Brooklyn.

The blast rocked a stretch of the Prospect Park West Neighborhood of New York’s Brooklyn borough at approximately 1:22 a.m. ET. The blast occurred in the basement of the building at 556 Prospect Park West, where an undetermined amount of gas was apparently going off, leaving a crater in the basement. The blast destroyed most of the basement in the 50-unit building.

Nearly a dozen people, including a pregnant woman and 4-year-old boy, were in the building when the explosion occurred, a police source told CNN. A fire was reported at the nearby Newark Avenue Houses — a public housing complex housing up to 100 families.

The extent of the injuries was not immediately known.

Images from the scene showed rubble all over the block and emergency personnel tending to victims, some of whom appeared to be in shock.

CNN affiliate WCBS reported that children had been taken from the scene with injuries, including smoke inhalation.

It was not immediately clear what caused the explosion, but the explosion site was reportedly exposed to an elevated gas main. The explosion comes on the heels of an incident on Tuesday where fire destroyed hundreds of apartments in Chelsea as well as an explosion earlier last year in the East Village that left three people dead.
