Playing football on ‘a virtual world’

FIFA are fond of gameshows about special events or events which exist only in the exotic, mythical, fictional realms of sport.

What do you think of when you think about these typically bizarre gameshows? A … Test match. There have been plenty of virtual test matches played over the years, but the match in England was the first to officially occur on a virtual world. What a difference 21 years makes!

The event, called ‘vCovID and “ViddyLearn 2018,’ will take place in Tokyo for the first time on November 26 and 27, after Fifa and the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) signed a major partnership.

CovID (Coventry City in English) is an abbreviation of ‘Lord Mayor’s Dorchester International Football Tournament’, an annual event which was introduced in Dorchester in 2007, under the auspices of the Lord Mayor and the Mayor of St Christopher’s. It will also be a showcase for the London Olympic Park and the kick-off of the athletics season in Britain.
